One of the first things you should take into consideration are permanent aspects of your home that will not change. These are items like your roof shingles, stone decoration and even landscape.

There are three parts of a home’s exterior that are usually painted. The main body, accent color and trim color or in some cases the main body and trim. Your main body makes up the majority of the color seen on a house. The accent color is applied to shutters, doors and garage doors. Trim is what lines your windows and doors; fascia and soffit board runs along the lower edge of the roof. The main body color should be dominate so your trim can compliment it. It is common nowadays for some to also select an accent color that emphasizes/contrasts the two colors.

As you try to determine the colors you’ll select you can begin by gathering inspiration from online sources such as HGTV or taking a drive around your local residential areas to see what others are doing. Many paint manufacturers offer online resources in the form of visualizers to help you picture what a home could look like with different selections. Once you have chosen your colors you can pick paint samples up at the nearest home improvement store if you would like to see what the color will look like in-person.
